Author - Toni Morrison
Rating - * * *

This book requires a lot of hard work and a I-cant-abandon-it-now attitude specially during the first few chapters of the book when this feeling is highly pre-dominant. The book has the capability to sway its readers between the extremes of intense frustration to intense joy of having gotten one’s hand on such a marvelous book.

Life & Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, The

Rating - * *

Funny in a mundane way. The name of the book is misleading – there is very little travel [most of it is in Bryson’s head] and the thunderbolt kid makes erratic appearances at the start and then disappears altogether.

A book that I should have skipped and spent my money elsewhere [sigh].

Great Indian Novel,The

Rating - * * *  and 1/2 *

A quirky, controversial and satire filled book, pretty much the same adjectives one whould use for the author - Shashi Tharoor - known for his controversial tweets and wife-related fiasco.

What is the book about

It is neither completely fiction nor is it completely non-fiction. Its a mashup of the mythological and famous Mahabharata story and the Indian Independence freedom movement and the events post the independence. The book uses characters from Mahabharata and draws a parallel of these characters in the freedom struggle. So Bhisma becomes Gandhi, Duryodhan becomes Indra Gandhi, Pandu becomes Netaji and so on and so forth.

A Serendipty moment with Books

Its one of those days that start of on an usual note and then suddenly there is what is called a "Serendipity" moment which changes your day dramatically....

I am in Mumbai, a guilty escape trip from work, and although its not really a book-lover kind of city, it is very well known for its numerous and obscure book stores that have sprouted in different nooks and corners of this chaotic city - which are a haven for bibliophiles.

New Year, New Challenges & New Books!!

Another new year dawns and I was cheering with skepticism [old habits die hard...] the devil part of me whispering in the corner of my fuzzy brain - are you sure? are you sure?

Well, yes I am sure - for the most part that is. This year brings with it a new job and a new house [both deals to materialize in Feb - yay] and well of course new BOOKS!

The year has started with "The Great Indian Novel" and its a wonderful book so far - I will be reviewing it shortly - and I couldnt have asked for a better start to the year. I ordered a book yesterday from FlipKart - the "Fast Food Nation" - my first food related book which I am very excited to get my hands on  so that I can devour it at the earliest. Then probably it will be one of my all time favorites - "To Kill a Mocking Bird" - yes I am going to re-read it, the book deserves it. One of the books that has caught my attention during my long hours spent on browsing is "At Home" by Bill Bryson, the quirky travel writer and going by the reviews it should be an interesting read - BUT for the price - its an imported edition here and its expensive - and as much as I like, no love books, there is a point where I draw the line - will probably wait for the paperback indian release of the book...sigh.

And of course - the Bhagawad Gita - that is a challenge that I have to meet this year - just wondering if I have taken more than I can chew? [aarghh there the devil in me goes again..]

But for now let me toast to 2012 - many books to go, many promises to keep....
